Mental health challenges affect many employees — a fact that is usually overlooked because these disorders tend to be hidden at work. Research shows that, among Americans ages 15 to 54, 18% of those who were employed said they experienced symptoms of a mental health disorder in the previous month.

The stigma attached to having a mental health disorder is such that employees may be reluctant to seek treatment for fear that they might jeopardize their jobs. At the same time, managers may want to help but are not sure how to do so. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused even greater stress on employee and they will be affected well beyond the initial crisis.

It is critical that employers understand their role in encouraging, supporting and maintaining a culture of mental health and wellbeing and the specific actions they can take to increase mental health and wellbeing in their organizations to improve employee engagement and retention.
